Happy World Down Syndrome Day!

The past years' posts in my feed have highlighted our love and gratitude for having Miles in our life as well as advocacy for inclusion. Not only because of how it impacts him, but also how it can deprive a community from learning from and growing with those like him. Using 'people first' language and the international down syndrome community's 'assume that I can so maybe I will' are great examples of that.

In addition, from a personal perspective, I want to highlight the daily hidden and normalized struggles of caregiving for someone with a designation as well as the internal dichotomy of mourning the potential loss of a neurotypical future while consistently supporting their capacity to live a full and integrated life. It is a challenging set of ingredients to add to general parenting/caregiver life. I salute parents, caregivers, siblings, extending families, friends and support teams for making space and courageously advocating.

I encourage anyone orbiting those who are in support roles for these special souls to ask themselves how they can join the party and engage, even if it is only to lend an ear.

I did a lot of things last year, but this gallery day was a thing. There's musical harmony which is a magical sorcery all by itself whether you play or listen. Then there is the live experience of being harmonious with other musicians creating a harmony out of thin air which is greater than any one person. Some pretty damn cool stuff happens sometimes with a little fellowship and it's always a gift to get to be in the room when it does.⁠
